Blackwell Library will be closed on Saturday, 2/6/2010, due to the impending snowstorm. We will reopen on Sunday, 2/7/2010, from 12pm - 6pm, weather permitting. Watch this space for more details! And be careful out there!

New display on JD Salinger

As you may have heard, JD Salinger passed away last week at the age of 91. He was one of the last WWII era American authors still living, and was likely best known for his iconic novel of teenage angst The Catcher in the Rye. The popularity and notoriety that came from the success of Catcher sent Salinger into hiding in Cornish, NH for the remainder of his life. Many have speculated on whether Salinger continued to write in seclusion, and await to hear if any such writings will be published.

In the meantime, you can check out the latest display at the library! We have several books on Salinger's writing, short stories of his, and SU's own John Wenke's criticism/interpretation of Salinger: J.D. Salinger : a study of the short fiction.

New Research Chat Service!

Do you ever wish you could ask one of the Blackwell Librarians a research question but you're nowhere near the library? Do you ever need help when you're studying upstairs and don't want to abandon your laptop and seat to come down to the Research Desk? Are you a distance ed student who needs research help?

Well, we have great news! Blackwell Librarians have launched a new chat/IM service that works with nearly all major IM providers. So add blackwellref to your friends list and feel free to ask questions during the Research Desk's normal hours of operation.

Some questions are better posed electronically than others. It's not as useful for long, complicated research questions as meeting face-to-face with a librarian, but for shorter questions to verify citations or ask for quick tips/hints, it's ideal!

The long wait is over! Duplexing is now available at the library!

What is duplexing? Duplexing is the ability to print on both sides of the paper. It uses the same amount of toner, but drastically cuts down on paper use!

How to duplex? From the Print menu, click on the Properties box. Instead of General Everyday Printing, click the Two-sided Duplex Printing. Click Ok. You're done!

The Birds of North America Online Trial is on Now!

BNA Online provides comprehensive life histories for each of the 716+ species of birds breeding in the USA (including Hawaii) and Canada.

In two centuries of American ornithology, The Birds of North America (BNA) is only the fourth comprehensive reference covering the life histories of North America’s breeding birds. Following in the footsteps of Wilson, Audubon, and Bent, BNA provides a quantum leap in information beyond what those historic figures were able to assemble. The print version of BNA was completed in 2002 – 18 volumes, 18,000 pages -- a joint 10 year project of the American Ornithologists' Union, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Academy of Natural Sciences. Now as an online project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, BNA is becoming a living resource. Account contents are updated frequently, with contributions from researchers, citizen scientists, and designated reviewers and editors. In addition, BNA Online contains image and video galleries showing plumages, behaviors, habitat, nests and eggs, and more. And most online BNA accounts now feature recordings of the songs and calls of their species, recordings selected from the extensive collection of Cornell's Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds. Future work will enhance BNA’s audio and video contributions, speed revisions via efforts coordinated online, and provide a significant boost to the number of photos available to subscribers.
