Government Document of the Month: October

An important part of Government Documents are the bound volumes of the Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States.  The volumes are received free from the Government Printing Office because Blackwell Library is a Federal Depository Library.  On display this month are the first volumes in the collection from the last three presidents and book one of the first volume from the papers of President Obama.  All of the volumes from Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover through Obama in the collection can be checked out. The volumes can be found in the stacks upstairs under the call number:  J82.E9.  The display is located on the first floor of the library in the Government Document section.

World Bank eLibrary Trial

What is the World Bank eLibrary?

The World Bank eLibrary is the World Bank’s subscription-based collection of nearly 6,000 books, reports, journals, and working papers including:

·         Development Outreach, World Bank Economic Review and World Bank Research Observer journal articles published since 1996

·         Development Economics (DEC) policy research working papers published since 1995

·         e-books and reports dating as far as the 1970’s

World Bank eLibrary contains only the final, peer-reviewed versions of the Bank’s formal publications.

It is designed to meet the needs of the library, academic and research community.

September Government Document of the Month

How much do you know about YOUR Constitution?  Do you know what the first 10 amendments are to the United States Constitution which are called the Bill of Rights?  The September Government Document of the Month display features the Constitution in conjunction with Constitution Day celebrated on September 17^th.   Stop by to read some interesting facts about the Constitution.  The display is located on the first floor of the library in the Government Document section.

Government Document of the Month: August

For an interesting vacation destination this August see our Government Document of the Month display on the Civil War located on the first floor of the library.  There are several handbooks and a trail guide featuring a variety of Civil War sites or memorials.  The documents offer a little something for everyone from a history buff to a military hobbyist to a family looking to combine travel with education.  There is also a website address directing the user to an archive of newspaper stories from events in Maryland during the War.

Our Leisure Reading Collection Gets Its First Graphic Novel

Just arrived for our Leisure Reading Collection: Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles by Dennis Calero.  This addition marks our first graphic novel in the collection.  This authorized adaptation graphically translates fourteen of Bradbury’s interconnected science fiction stories into one novel.

Here’s the summary [taken from the inside cover]: “The Earthmen came by the handful, then the hundreds, then the millions.  They swept aside the majestic, dying Martian civilization to build their homes, shopping malls, and cities.  Mars began as a place of boundless hopes and dreams, a planet to replace an Earth sinking into waste and war. It became a canvas for mankind’s follies and darkest desires.”

The Leisure Reading Collection is located on the main floor of the library near the elevator and Circulation Desk.
