Good news! We've created an entry form for new additions to the Faculty Scholarship Database. You can find out more by clicking How to Submit on the left navigation bar. When submitting entries, the form has a separate box for each type of publication, so make sure to scroll down to the type of publication you are submitting!
We will continue to accept vitae for those faculty/staff with several additions for the database. Faculty can email their publication information to their library liaisons as well.

News from the Stacks!
We've recently made some exciting changes here in Blackwell!
On the first floor, the Research/Instructional Services librarians worked very hard this summer to pare down our Reference Collection to the best and most useful titles. In doing so, we were able to take out two rows of shelving and add more seating space for students!
On the second floor, you may notice books have been moved up in the stacks. (What are "stacks," you ask? That's librarian jargon for the books you can check out!) We've been busy with a yearlong shifting project to move our collection. We started in the Z's and have worked our way up to the D's! New labels on the ends of rows tell you where things are at. Special thanks to all of the students who have gotten a workout moving books and also to the youth group from Allen Memorial Church who also volunteered their time and muscles to the effort!

Green Changes at the Library

Have you seen the new printers in the library? Beginning fall semester, you will be able to duplex print jobs. This means you’ll save paper by using both sides. Read up on how to use this service here: http://www.salisbury.edu/president/sustainabilityinitiatives/SU_double_sided_printing.pdf
Ever wanted to use the upstairs lab’s scanner, but a class was in session? A new scanner has been ordered for use on the main floor of the library! Soon you will be able to scan those articles instead of making a paper copy.
As always, recycling receptacles are available throughout the library.

Journey from the Land of No
The New Student Reader Program kicks off the 2009 academic year with 'Journey from the Land of No', a marvelous memoir by author Roya Hakakian.
"In Journey from the Land of No Roya Hakakian recalls her childhood and adolescence in prerevolutionary Iran with candor and verve. The result is a beautifully written coming-of-age story about one deeply intelligent and perceptive girl’s attempt to find an authentic voice of her own at a time of cultural closing and repression. Remarkably, she manages to re-create a time and place dominated by religious fanaticism, violence, and fear with an open heart and often with great humor."

Displays in the Library
Hope everyone is enjoying summer! If you haven't been in the library lately, we invite you to stop by and see our current displays. While you're in, you could pick up a book from our Leisure Reading Collection so you have something great to read on the beach on one of these sweltering days!
Here are the current displays:
1. History of Blackwell Library with narrative texts taken from Kathryn Kalmanson's "Looking Back: Blackwell Library From the Beginning" article
2. "An Ever-changing Landscape" (various construction and aerial views of the campus from 1930s to 1970s)
3. "Rat Week" (Freshmen Orientation Rules from the 1940s and 1950s with assorted memorabilia)
4. "Successful Athletic teams" (plaques from the Alumni House)
5. "History of Salisbury" (a Nabb Research Center exhibit)
In addition to the exhibits in the display cases, there is also a 6-panel wall exhibit pertaining to the origins of the School Seal.

What are the Blackwell Librarians up to this summer?
Sometimes people are surprised to learn that the librarians at Blackwell work all summer even though we are university faculty. Although we'd love to lounge on the beach all summer, it's a great time of the year for us to catch up on projects that we're too busy to tackle during the school year. We thought we'd take a few moments to share what we're up to this summer!
Susan Brazer, Science Librarian, is collaborating with the Chemistry Department to create an i-Tunes University site for a Chemistry class.
Stephanie Fridie, Reference and Instruction Librarian, is adding entries to the Faculty Scholarship Database this summer. She also plans to read book reviews and check lists of recommended books to see which titles are needed to support curricula in the areas of Nursing, Health Sciences, and Psychology. She reminds us that SU faculty and others may recommend books for the library through the new online form!
Kathryn Kalmanson, Head of Research Services, will be writing collection policies, weeding collections, ordering new books, creating new web pages and working on the library's fall newsletter. On the home front, Kathryn is planning to tend her vegetable garden, grow some unusual plants, and do some painting and wallpapering!
Krista Knapp, Reference and Instruction Librarian, is co-facilitating an online course with Dr. Mullins in the CMAT Department. She is also hard at work updating web-based tutorials to feature the new library website. Krista and her colleagues Mandy and Michelle will present their poster "Faculty Scholarship Database: Ingenuity through Collaboration" at the American Library Association annual conference in Chicago next month. After she goes to Chicago, she and her family are headed out to beautiful Colorado Springs to visit breathtaking sites such as Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak!
Michelle Oleson, Web/Digital Services Librarian, is attending the ALA Conference in Chicago as well. She designed the poster that she, Mandy and Krista are presenting. When she's not creating and editing web pages and tending to the library's technology issues, she plans to enjoy as much "staycation" time in Salisbury as possible. However, she will take a short jaunt to see Tori Amos in Minneapolis in August and will attend a sci fi convention in Atlanta at the end of the summer.
