Disability Awareness Month

October also commemorates Disability Awareness Month. The display in Blackwell Library is designed to recognize social and cultural contributions made by people with disabilities. In addition, we highlight some of our software packages designed to aid in research for people with various disabilities.

World Vegetarian Day

On October 1st marks the first day of Vegetarian Awareness Month. A healthy vegetarian diet is a significant preventative measure against heart disease, cancer, and other major diseases; can help solve world hunger; conserves precious resources such as topsoil, water, energy, and irreplaceable rain forests; and saves animals. Consider trying a meatless meal or going vegetarian for the day, month, or longer.

Libraries & First Amendment Exhibit

Blackwell Library hosts "Libraries and the First Amendment," a new exhibit provided by the Chicago-based McCormick Freedom Museum, that explores the library’s role in enabling and protecting First Amendment freedoms. Libraries provide access to information about countless subjects to widely diverse audiences, making occasional controversy almost inevitable. They can be the setting for raucous controversy, especially relating to freedom of speech and the First Amendment. This exhibit, which runs through October, gets to the bottom of these issues by examining timeless and relevant topics that speak to all Americans. In addition to the main exhibit, which is composed of a display board of how the world would look if individuals lost their First Amendment rights, quotations from important leaders of our time on the importance of the First Amendment hanging throughout the building, and thought-provoking tabletop stands, a companion Web exhibit www.FreedomInLibraries.org invites online viewers to explore specific controversies, vote on key issues and add their voice to a larger, national discussion.

New Scanner on the 1st Floor

Have you ever needed to use the scanner in the BL203 lab but there was a class using the lab? We have too. But fear not! There is now a scanner on the main floor of the library. It is located temporarily in one of the small rooms across from the Snack Room. Ask at the Circulation Desk if you need help finding it.

The scanner can convert documents and color images into bitmap, jpeg, tiff, and pdf files. These files can then be saved to a flash drive, saved to your P drive, or emailed to yourself.

Attention Faculty!

Good news! We've created an entry form for new additions to the Faculty Scholarship Database. You can find out more by clicking How to Submit on the left navigation bar. When submitting entries, the form has a separate box for each type of publication, so make sure to scroll down to the type of publication you are submitting!

We will continue to accept vitae for those faculty/staff with several additions for the database. Faculty can email their publication information to their library liaisons as well.

News from the Stacks!

We've recently made some exciting changes here in Blackwell!

On the first floor, the Research/Instructional Services librarians worked very hard this summer to pare down our Reference Collection to the best and most useful titles. In doing so, we were able to take out two rows of shelving and add more seating space for students!

On the second floor, you may notice books have been moved up in the stacks. (What are "stacks," you ask? That's librarian jargon for the books you can check out!) We've been busy with a yearlong shifting project to move our collection. We started in the Z's and have worked our way up to the D's! New labels on the ends of rows tell you where things are at. Special thanks to all of the students who have gotten a workout moving books and also to the youth group from Allen Memorial Church who also volunteered their time and muscles to the effort!

Ever wanted to use the upstairs lab’s scanner, but a class was in session? A new scanner has been ordered for use on the main floor of the library! Soon you will be able to scan those articles instead of making a paper copy.

As always, recycling receptacles are available throughout the library.
