Meet Blackwell Library's Newest Librarian!
Please join Salisbury University in welcoming Michael English to the library faculty. Michael comes to us from Florida Gulf Coast University and has a Masters in Library Science from the University of South Florida and a Masters in French Studies from University of Albany SUNY. Michael is our new Access Services Librarian so you will see him around the Circulation Desk. His office is BL129 and his phone is 7-0131. Stop by and say hi!

New Technology at the Library
We have some exciting new services and technology available at Blackwell Library.
First, we have a Printer Kiosk on your right as you enter the building. You can quickly print without having to log in to the network.
Secondly, we have a fax machine for sending faxes. It is located against the front wall of the building across from the Circulation Desk. Next to the fax machine we also have a scanner which is great for scanning journal articles, photos, and other documents.
Of course we still have public printers and copiers available as well! And yes, you can print in color!

Welcome Back to Campus!

What We're Up To At Blackwell This Summer!
Did you know that Blackwell Library is open all summer? Check out our hours here. So, even though librarians are faculty members, we have to be here to keep the doors open! What do we do all summer when we aren't teaching as many classes or helping as many students at the research desk? Well, here's just a few of our librarians and what's on their summer agendas:
Leigh Ann DePope, Serials/Electronic Services librarian, will be attending the North American Serials Interest Group conference where she will be learning about e-resource management, license agreements and other great serials technologies. She will also be spending a relaxing two weeks in her favorite vacation spot, Holden Beach, NC.
Stephanie Fridie, Research/Instructional Services librarian, virtually attended the annual conferences of the Medical Library Association, May 21-May 26th, and will also be attending the American Library Association annual conference from June 24-June 29th. She will also be adding records of SU works to the Faculty Scholarship Database. To submit new items, click here or email the information to Stephanie. Stephanie will also be reviewing new book titles to add to the collection and revising subject guides for her liaison departments: Health Sciences, Nursing, and Psychology. She will be revising a collection policy for the Nursing department and revising a section of the departmental handbook. She plans to visit her family in New York State for a few days in June and in August.
Kathryn Kalmanson, Head of Research/Instructional Services, will be working on web pages, the departmental handbook, and organizing collection policies on the library's shared drive. When she's not doing those fascinating things, she'll be concentrating on household renovations, including hanging wallpaper, painting and making draperies!
Stephen Ford, Information Literacy Librarian, will be presenting at the MILEX workshop in mid-July. His presentation is entitled "Gadgets, Guides and Giggles: Fostering Fun in Your Learning Space."
Krista Knapp, Research/Instructional Librarian, will be making video tutorials using the software program Camtasia. She is also facilitating an online course for faculty learning to teach with our course management system. She's helping out CMAT297 students with their research projects via MyClasses as well. On top of that, she's building a training manual for student workers in public services at the library and attending a webinar about library marketing. On her few precious days off, she's traveling to Indiana, New York, and to the beach as many times as possible!
On behalf of the Technical Services Department, Associate Dean Martha Zimmerman shares this juicy tidbit:
The Technical Services Division will be spending the lazy days of summer working on their annual reports (5 total), tracking down and ordering core out-of-print books for the collection, working up prices for lost books, weeding government documents, finalizing a serials collection development policy, producing finding aids for archival materials, weeding the Les Callette collection, and cataloging books for the Nabb Center and Ward Museum. This is by no means a comprehensive list! Professional development is spurred along by conference attendance (Maryland Library Association, Maryland History and Cultural Collaborative, and the North American Serials Interest Group) and webinars (disaster planning, new subscription models for electronic journal content, how to participate in a digitization grant). When not engaged in these activities, Technical Services folk may be found gardening, lounging on the beach, horsing around (with a horse), spending quality time with children and cats, and – of all things – reading!

Pardon Our Dust!
You may notice some extra noise and commotion on the first floor of Blackwell this summer. We are creating a new space to teach information literacy classes and for students to work individually and in groups. We removed the wall between the two glass rooms; one contained photocopiers and the other housed computers and microfilm/microfiche readers. This new, bigger space will offer mobile furniture and a cart of netbooks as well as an instructor podium. We are designing the space to be flexible for many different uses!
Because of the construction, access to our Accessibility Room is unavailable until the project is complete. We have temporarily relocated the Accessibility machines just outside Office 129. If you need any help with these machines, please contact Gaylord Robb.
The work should be completed sometime this summer. Thank you for your understanding!
