What are the Blackwell Librarians up to this summer?

Sometimes people are surprised to learn that the librarians at Blackwell work all summer even though we are university faculty. Although we'd love to lounge on the beach all summer, it's a great time of the year for us to catch up on projects that we're too busy to tackle during the school year. We thought we'd take a few moments to share what we're up to this summer!

Susan Brazer, Science Librarian, is collaborating with the Chemistry Department to create an i-Tunes University site for a Chemistry class.

Stephanie Fridie, Reference and Instruction Librarian, is adding entries to the Faculty Scholarship Database this summer. She also plans to read book reviews and check lists of recommended books to see which titles are needed to support curricula in the areas of Nursing, Health Sciences, and Psychology. She reminds us that SU faculty and others may recommend books for the library through the new online form!

Kathryn Kalmanson, Head of Research Services, will be writing collection policies, weeding collections, ordering new books, creating new web pages and working on the library's fall newsletter. On the home front, Kathryn is planning to tend her vegetable garden, grow some unusual plants, and do some painting and wallpapering!

Krista Knapp, Reference and Instruction Librarian, is co-facilitating an online course with Dr. Mullins in the CMAT Department. She is also hard at work updating web-based tutorials to feature the new library website. Krista and her colleagues Mandy and Michelle will present their poster "Faculty Scholarship Database: Ingenuity through Collaboration" at the American Library Association annual conference in Chicago next month. After she goes to Chicago, she and her family are headed out to beautiful Colorado Springs to visit breathtaking sites such as Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak!

Michelle Oleson, Web/Digital Services Librarian, is attending the ALA Conference in Chicago as well. She designed the poster that she, Mandy and Krista are presenting. When she's not creating and editing web pages and tending to the library's technology issues, she plans to enjoy as much "staycation" time in Salisbury as possible. However, she will take a short jaunt to see Tori Amos in Minneapolis in August and will attend a sci fi convention in Atlanta at the end of the summer.

Database Trials!

We have two new database trials to share with you. The first is AtoZ Maps Online. This is the largest online database of downloadable maps for college libraries. You will need the username and password to login, so please email Krista Knapp if you'd like to try this database out.

The other trial database is Global Road Warrior. You can learn about cultural stereotypes and superstitions, social and business etiquette, dating rituals, holidays and festivals, and local cuisine. Once again, email Krista Knapp for the username and password.

These database trials will last through the month of June. We'd love to hear your feedback.

Library Purchase of Student Art Work

The library is pleased to announce our acquisition of the following painting:
Artist: Jessica Hessler
Format: Oil on canvas
Title: Filling the Void
Size: 30" x 40"
Year of Creation: 2009

The library selects either one or two works per year from the two senior art shows to receive a prize. The purpose of the Library Prize is to create a permanent display in the library of the best SU student art work. This will showcase excellent work, continue the University's tradition of displaying art not just in galleries but throughout the campus, and give students weary from study an opportunity to integrate the aesthetic with the scholarly.

Eligibility information:

● The art work must have been created by an SU student while enrolled at Salisbury University.
● Eligible works must be in a finished and stable state.
● The format is restricted to 2-dimensional fine art works, such as painting, drawing and photography.
● Because of wall space limitations, the scale, or size, of the work will be considered in deliberations.
● Eligible works should integrate well with the architecture of and environment in the library building. The Dean of Libraries and Instructional Resources reserves the right to make final decisions regarding this matter.
● Not For Sale (NFS) works will be excluded from consideration.

If the criteria are not met there may be years when no prize is awarded.

The funding for this comes largely from the Middendorf Foundation, Inc., which gave the library $20,000 in December, 2007, to establish an endowment for this purpose.

This year's winning art is being displayed temporarily in Dean Alice Bahr's office until it is cataloged and mounted in a public area.

Our new website launches 6/1!

Through the efforts of the Web Committee, headed by our innovative and extraordinarily talented Web/Digital Services Librarian, Michelle Oleson, Blackwell Library is pleased to present our new website, which will officially launch on June 1st.

The brand new look features easy search boxes for books and articles as well as a live feed of our Blackwell Buzz. The new tab format allows us to provide the same content but in a cleaner, more organized way (and you know how we librarians love to organize!) Be sure to check out the new guides under the Services Tab for Faculty, Students and Community. Read our new "About Us" section featuring a message from Dean Alice Bahr. The Help Tab offers a brand new page about technology in the library, and of course links to all the other wonderful sources of help available to Blackwell Library users.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Michelle Oleson. We'd love to hear what you think!
